Northern Indiana Pastel Society member Alan Larkin’s painting, Time Piece, (left) is the winner of this year’s Pastel Journal Founder’s Award (in memory of Maggie Price) in the 17th Annual Pastel 100 competition. The piece presents a magical assemblage of objects, painted in a tall, narrow format, which encourages a unique perspective and exploration. Robert K. Carsten, the Still Life & Floral category juror, says of the work: “I find the slender, vertical format and cropping of shapes in this painting intriguing. The artist’s selection and placement of elements—combined with contrasts of saturated colors, which are set off by darks and a few select lights—evoke a strong sense of mystery.”
More about the grand prizewinning artist, his working methods and materials is featured in the April issue of Pastel Journal. You can also visit his web site Larkin Studio | The Art of Alan Larkin.

Mary will be honored at a reception on March 29 at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
